Students enter dragons' den

A team of students from LVC has won first prize in a 'Dragons' Den' style competition which took place at the college on Wednesday 14 July.

The 2010 Eco-Challenge, hosted by LVC for the Cambridgeshire & Peterborough Enterprise Learning Partnership, challenged students to come up with an eco-friendly design for a product using recycled newspapers and present it to a panel of judges from the Cambridge News, Taylor Vinters Solicitors, Clydesdale Bank and eco-entrepreneur Max McMurdo, whose own appearance on the BBC's 'Dragons' Den' in 2007 helped to launch his Reestore eco-furniture company.

The competition featured more than 50 students from secondary schools in Cambridge, Huntingdon, Peterborough, St Neots and Haverhill as well as two teams from LVC.

The LVC Weavers team of Joe Davies, Georgina McGivern, Lizzie Sanders, Louisa Pett and Catriona Skarnes impressed the 'dragons' with their plan for creating woven message boards out of old newspapers, which could be custom designed for different genders, age groups or special occasions. Judges commented that their presentation combined creative thinking, business acumen, eco-awareness and marketing skills. The students had even designed a dress made out of woven newspapers which could be used to launch the product at London Fashion Week. As part of their prize, their idea will be pitched to a national newspaper by Max McMurdo.
