Success for young cricketers

Two teams of girls from LVC were crowned county champions on Tuesday 13 July at the historic Fenners cricket ground in Cambridge.

The year 7 girls, captained by Rebecca Free, won the championship with victory against St Bede’s School, Cambridge.

The year 9 girls, captained by Ellie West, narrowly lost their first two games but still managed to win their league to become county champions after some big hitting by Sophie Allen in the final game.

‘These girls have been a pleasure to teach,’ said John Maddock, head of PE. ‘Most of them had not played cricket before this term but they will always remember this special day at Fenners. I hope that some of them go on to play for their local village clubs as they undoubtedly have the skills and talent.’

The year 8 girls, captained by Jasmin Mills and coached by year 10 junior sports leader Sam Hawley, came fifth in their competition.

The year 8 boys’ team, captained by Luke Barkes, also played some outstanding cricket with diving stops, high catches and big sixes, and finished as runners-up after losing the final to their local rivals from Sawston Village College.
