Ethos and Aims

The Food Preparation and Nutrition curriculum covers a comprehensive range of topics that enable learners to gain a broad and rich understanding of the subject. Every student at Linton Village College will have the opportunity to prepare, cook and present a range of nutritious dishes. Students will build on key skills and develop a sound understanding of the contribution Food makes towards a healthy balanced lifestyle.

KS3 Curriculum Content

In Years 7 and 8 students will study the topics below. These will include both theoretical and practical lessons.

• Food safety
• Nutrition and dietary requirements
• International food culture
• Food provenance

In Year 9 students will build on their prior KS3 skills and gain a greater understanding of food science. They will learn about the functional and chemical properties of ingredients and how these are used in food preparation to produce high quality outcomes. Students will develop their knowledge of nutrients, their sources, and functions in the body. They complete an extended project where they will have the opportunity to plan, prepare and cook in response to a given context.

KS4 Curriculum Content

At Linton Village College we currently deliver the OCR GCSE Food Preparation and Nutrition. The content of this course aims to encourage learners to cook and make informed decisions about a wide range of further learning opportunities and career pathways.  Life skills are developed that enable learners to feed themselves and others affordably, now, and later in life. Learners will cover a broad range of content within the following areas of study:

• Nutrition
• Food: Food provenance and food choice
• Cooking and food preparation
• Skills requirements: preparation and cooking techniques

Enrichment & Extra Curricular Opportunities

There are many opportunities for students to extend their learning in Food Preparation and Nutrition. The team run a very popular after school cooking club that is open to all students in KS3 and KS4. There is also an opportunity to join the catering and events team. This enables learners to experience catering for clients and gain an understanding of the demands of the catering and hospitality industry.
